Melbourne
Destination Profile

Melbourne is the second largest city of Australia.and the capital of the state of Victoria. It lies on Port Phillip Bay on the southeastern coast, and is a busy seaport, Australia's chief financial city, and Victoria's commercial and industrial center.

The city and its suburbs cover more than 2,400 square miles (6,200 square kilometers). Downtown Melbourne is on the northern shore of Port Phillip Bay. Important buildings include the State Library of Victoria and Parliament House, where the Victoria legislature meets. The Yarra River runs through Melbourne. Several parks surround the city. The Melbourne Cup, a famous horse race, takes place yearly at Flemington Racecourse. The Australian Grand Prix automobile race is also held in Melbourne.

Most of Melbourne's residents are of British ancestry. About three-fourths of the people were born in Australia. Many people from the United Kingdom, Greece, Italy, and other European countries, and from Southeast Asia, have settled in Melbourne since World War II ended in 1945.

THE MELBOURNE CUP
Melbourne Cup is the most famous horse race on the Australian or New Zealand racing calendar. It is a handicap event run over 2 miles (3.2 kilometers) at Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne on the first Tuesday in November. The race is broadcast on radio and television. People in Melbourne have a public holiday for the race.

The race was first run in 1861. It continued through World War I (1914-1918), World War II (1939-1945), and the depressions of the 1890's and 1930's. It has survived gangsters who tried to shoot a favorite. In 1930, two men in a car fired two shots at Phar Lap, the horse that had been backed for a fortune in cup doubles. Both shots missed the horse.

Three Melbourne Cup winners, The Pearl (1871), Wotan (1936), and Old Rowley (1940), had started at odds of 100 to 1. Horses with even higher odds have gained second or third place.
