Germany is a large country in central Europe, and home to more people than any other country in the rest of Europe, with the exception of Russia. Berlin, Germany's capital and largest city, is a cultural, economic, and political centre of Europe. Germany's land ranges from a low, flat plain in the north of the country to mountainous regions in the south. The country has a number of world-famous scenic areas. The Bavarian Alps are one of the many natural attractions in Germany. Located in the southern border , it is a very popular destination for winter sports. The Black Forest is a mountainous region in the South-WEst and is best known for its mineral springs and spas (see Kaiserslautern). In Western Germany, many people enjoy boat rides on the beautiful Rhine River, which winds through valleys where grand castles overlook the river.
Germans have made countless contributions to culture. Johann Sebastian Bach and Ludwig van Beethoven are two of the better known names who composed some of the world's finest music. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Thomas Mann wrote literary masterpieces, and German scientists have consistenly made breakthroughs throughout time in the areas of chemistry, medicine and physics.
For hundreds of years, Germans lived in many separate states. One of the most powerful was the kingdom of Prussia, which during the late 1800's was united by Otto von Bismarck, then Prime Minister of Prussia. After Bismarck came many attempts by ensuing leaders to expand German influence throughout Europe and beyond. It was a struggle which ended in heavy defeat in 1918, which also marked the end of World War I. A period of political and economic crisis followed. Hitler persisted with German expansion dreams and again Germany suffered the consequences of defeat.
Since the wars, Germany has struggled with its economy. The reunification of East and West Germany, and joining the European Union were difficult moments for Germany and many sought work abroad during this period. However, the slump is now a battle being fought alongside its fellow European states, which has helped Germany recover a more comfortable position amongst world economies and regain its influence around the world. |
