London is so large that many Londoners think of themselves mainly as residents of a particular district, such as Chelsea, Soho, or Hampstead. The various districts were once separate villages, and many have kept their special character. Hampstead, for example, is known for its artists and writers, and Soho is known for its restaurants.
According to tradition, the only "real" Londoners are cockneys. A cockney is anyone born within hearing distance of the bells of St. Mary-le-Bow, a historic church in the City. The cockney accent was made famous by Eliza Doolittle, the uneducated cockney girl in George Bernard Shaw's play Pygmalion and its musical version, My Fair Lady.
London has attracted residents from other parts of the United Kingdom as well as from many countries around the world. The ancestors of today's Londoners include people who came from the United Kingdom, Ireland, the West Indies, and a number of other countries in Europe, Asia, and Africa.
