Glasgow is the largest city in Scotland and a center of industry and commerce. It lies on both sides of the River Clyde, in the Central Lowlands of Scotland.
The River Clyde leads into the Atlantic Ocean near Glasgow, and the city serves as a port for oceangoing vessels. Major Scotch whisky firms have their headquarters in the city.
The River Clyde runs through the center of Glasgow, and Highland hills are visible on the city's outskirts. Glasgow has many parks and wide streets. Its major landmark is its medieval cathedral. The city also has many impressive stone buildings that were constructed in the 1800's, as well as numerous modern buildings. Rich in culture, Glasgow is the home of the Scottish Opera, the Scottish National Orchestra, and the Citizens Theatre. The city has two major museums--the Burrell Collection and the Kelvingrove Museum. It has several schools of higher education, including the University of Glasgow and the University of Strathclyde.
Glasgow's history can be traced back to the founding of a church in the 500's on the city's present site by Saint Kentigern. The name Glasgow is said to be derived from a Gaelic word that means dear green place. The city was officially founded about 1180, and received the rights of a royal burgh in 1636.
