Mount Baker (elevation 10,778 feet, 3285m) is a stratovolcano of ice-clad andesite in the Cascades of Washington State in the United States about 30 miles (50km) due east of the city of Bellingham, Whatcom County. It is also easily visible from much of Greater Victoria, Greater Vancouver and the Fraser Valley just across the Canadian border to the north–and especially from the communities of Mission and Abbotsford, British Columbia, both about 45 kilometres east of Vancouver. After Mount Rainier, Baker is the most heavily glaciated of the Cascade volcanoes: the volume of snow and ice on Mount Baker (0.43 cubic miles, 1.8 cubic kilometers) is greater than that of all the other Cascades volcanoes (except Rainier) combined. It is also one of the snowiest places in the world: in 1999, Mount Baker set the (unofficial) world record for snowfall in a single season. (1124 inches/93.67 feet/2855 cm)
Recreation
Most of Mount Baker is within the Mount Baker Wilderness Area, which borders North Cascades National Park. An area to the south of Mount Baker is included in the Mount Baker National Recreation Area, which was formed in order to allow snowmobile access to Schreibers Meadow.
The mountain and its surrounding areas are popular for climbing, backpacking, snowmobiling, skiing, camping and other types of outdoor recreation. The most popular climbing route is the Easton Glacier, which is typically climbed in 2 days. Ironically, this glacier is also popular with snowmobiles in the spring and early summer. The most popular summer trailhead is at Artist Point, the end of Washington State Route 542, also near Mount Shuksan. Due to the extreme amount of snow in the winter, Artist Point typically does not become accessible until August. The Mount Baker Ski Area lies below Artist Point and gets hundreds of inches of snow a year.
The volcano was known by Nooksack Indians as Koma Kulshan, meaning "white, steep mountain."
